Home Business Challenges
By Larry Strawson
Thanks to the Internet, just about any type of business can be run from home—even a retail sales business! However, working from home is much harder than you might think. Here is what you need to know if you are interested in starting your own home business:
Home Businesses Cost Money
You have probably been advised to save up six months' worth of living expenses before embarking on a new business venture—especially a home business venture. What many people will forget to tell you, however, is that starting a business also costs money! While running the business from your home will certainly cut down on expenses, you will still need to cover the cost of business registration and licenses. You will also need to pay the legal fees for incorporation, should you decide to incorporate your business. Make sure that you understand the costs involved in starting a business and factor that amount into your expenses.
Home Businesses Pose Challenges that Other Businesses Don't
When you run your business from home, you are subject to many distractions that aren't there when you operate from an outside location. How likely are you to be tempted to watch television when you are working in an office? Will you get distracted by the breakfast dishes at an office? Breaks are far more tempting when you are home because you have other, "built-in" things that have to be done as well. Focusing on your work is more difficult to do when you have the distractions of home in the background. This is even more so for work-at-home parents!
Finding a Place to Work Is Often a Challenge
When you operate out of the home, finding a place to dedicate to your business can be a challenge. If you want to claim your office space on your taxes, you will need to prove that you have an area of your home that is dedicated solely to running your home business and is not used for personal use. Not many people have enough space in their homes to dedicate an entire room to a home business. Most people find themselves operating out of their living rooms, dining rooms, and basements.
Running a Home Business is Very Rewarding
In spite of all the challenges in running a home-based business versus running an "outside" business, working from home can be very rewarding! You are saving money on office expenses and commuting. Instead of having to buy lunch, you can make it—in your own kitchen! What's more, most business today is conducted online, so there is no limit to the different types of businesses that you can run, right from your computer! Whether you want to have a t-shirt shop or a consulting business, just about anything can be run from home.
Running a home business is definitely challenging, but those who work from home agree: working at home is a lot better than working in an office and, hands down, it beats working for someone else!
